METZ – 7″ Number One [2009]

I got interested in METZ after receiving a text message around midnight on a Wednesday in late October. “Get to Halifax!” it demanded. This time it was in response to what was arguably the most impressive lineup at last year’s Halifax Pop Explosion: local downstroke enthusiasts VKNGS with Louisville, Kentucky’s volume impresarios Young Widows, and moustachioed rock and roll vigilantes Monotonix all the way from Tel Aviv. METZ were wedged somewhere in between all that and I have no doubt they held their own.

The band features former members of Moneen (Chris Slorach) and Three Penny Opera/The Grey (Hayden Menzies). Their debut 2-song single is impossibly heavy and loud. Slow. Plodding. Dirty reverb. Roaring vocals. They make the Melvins sound like a Disney band. Not really, I guess. But holy eff! This is great.

Both songs on the 7″ are streaming for free on the band’s MySpace ( “Soft Whiteout” and “Lump Sums,” respectively) and the single comes with a DropCard for free downloady goodness.

Banished from my iPod? OH. HELL. NO.

Standout tracks? There are only two! I like “Soft Whiteout” the most, but they’re both excellent.

Buy 7″ Number One from We Are Busybodies or download it from iTunes.

“Moustachioed rock and roll vigilantes,” good one.

These tunes don’t sound right coming through little computer speakers…one can imagine what it’s like live.

Yeah, that show’s gonna be ridiculous. We’re going to try to get down to Halifax to see them there too. They’re playing in a basement and then a second show at Gus’ Pub with VKNGS.
