The National – Alligator: It’s a good record to put on and listen to in its entirety. I don’t have much to say about this one beyond that, you’ve heard it.

Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso U.F.O – Lord of the Underground: Vishnu and the Magic Elixir: I don’t even know what those combinations of words mean, but Japanese psychedelia is all that needs to be said. They’re a long-running outfit that have gone under different names (usually Acid Mothers Temple + something), and have a bunch of records, but this is their latest, just out on MontrĂ©al’s Alien 8 label. As one can imagine from the name(s), it’s a trip, man.

Depeche ModeSounds of the Universe: Meh, I couldn’t get into it.

Flowers of HellCome Hell or High Water: Just heard of these folks recently. They’re a large ensemble of musicians from London and Toronto who play in other groups (in some cases quite popular ones) and do this on the side. Their tour poster proclaims them to be “Trans-Atlantic space rock symphonicness,” and you probably couldn’t do much better for a description. This record is comprised of grand (but fairly conventional) instrumentals, and has some nice moments. They’re playing a show in town next week, and it’ll be interesting to see how it works live.
