Relevant to Your Interests #009

June 4, 2009
  • A day or two after I painstakingly typed up the list of artists appearing a this year’s Sappy Fest from an ad in the June issue of Exclaim, they posted the lineup on their website for easy copypasta. Jesus H. Christ. Anyway, here’s the list: 100 Dollars, Adam Mowery Organization, Attack in Black, Baby Eagle, Baird Brothers, B.A. Johnston, Bloodsport, Brent Randall & His Pinecones, Burning Hell, Calvin Johnson, Cat Pontoon, Clues, Destroyer, Dog Day, D’Ubervilles, Eric’s Trip, Eric Chenaux, Fembots, Feuermusik, Gambletron, The Gertrudes, Harbour Coats, Horses, Jon Rae Fletcher, Jon McKiel, Julie Doiron, Julie Fader, Ladyhawk, Laura Borealis, Luyas, The Magic, Motion Ensemble, Old Man Luedecke, Ohbijou, Rick White, Rock Plaza Central, Ryan Driver, Shapes & Sizes, Shotgun Jimmie, Snailhouse, Spring Break Up, Timber Timber, Windom Earle, Wintersleep, Witchies, Women, Woolly Leaves, + more TBA.
  • Our pal Philip Clark recently went on tour with The Sleepless Nights and has transcribed parts of the trip over on Swordfight.org. In addition to being the east coast’s premier party technician, Philip is also good at stringing words together in a compelling and entertaining manner. You should check his shit out.
  • Related: Phil used to be in a hardcore band called Equation of State. Some old recordings were recently (read: last summer) unearthed, and they are being remastered right now. Look for a reissue… sometime.
  • Tour news: The Stolen Minks are playing some shows in Quebec, Ontario, and Newfoundland, while Dog Day are going to Victoria and back this month. Show some love, Canada.
  • The Weakerthans are touring this summer too, though mainly in the United States. They also recorded an “Itunes recording session” (I don’t really know what that means) in Mississauga while on the road with the Rolling Tundra Revue. The session will be released via iTunes on June 30th.
  • We don’t talk about hip hop a whole lot around here, but did you hear about the shitshow which ensued after Nas cancelled a show in Torbay, Newfoundland at the last minute? I guess the man and his entourage showed up at the airport and were told their accommodations were cancelled and they weren’t going to get their guarantee, so they bolted. Can you blame them? WTF, promoters.
  • A lot of bands are on Twitter now. Sloan are all, “No more ‘Sloan Video of the Day’ until we get 1,000 followers!” and Epitaph Records’ recent signees Set Your Goals will be giving away the first single from their forthcoming record, but only after their fans “tweet” them 5,000 times. In other news, science confirms Twitter is full of self-obsessed dudes. Yowza!
  • If These Trees Could Talk have a new(-ish?) record out, and there’s a sample track free for the streamin’/downloadin’ from your friends at PunkNews.org.
  • Back in the spring, the Beastie Boys released a deluxe version of 1993’s Check Your Head. They were on the Jimmy Fallon Show not long ago where they performed “So What’cha Want” from the record. Dig:

Thanks for the heads-up on the Weakerthans session. I hadn’t heard about that.

Happy to help. They’ve got a DVD on the way too, it’s supposed to be out late this year or early 2010.

Sappyfest, deliverin’ the goods again. Feuermusik, if anyone cares = the rhythm section from Rockets Red Glare. Far out.

Interesting, I had no idea. Dan says they sound nothing like RRG… something about woodwinds? Oh dear.

Yeah, they’ve been doing this odd avant jazz thing for a couple of years now. It’s sax and clarinet with buckets and cans and stuff used for percussion.
