It’s another grey summer day in NB. So how about an East German musical? Here’s the swell title tune from the cult classic DEFA-produced 1967 film Heißer Sommer.

That one’s not much of a video, but here are some excerpts from the film. Socialist youth on a summer holiday romp, enjoy!:

Ha! I forgot about this movie – I watched it for a film course a few semesters ago. The GDR sure looks like it was a fun place to be in the warmer months.

Ah, Ostalgie. Did they show Sonnenallee in that film course?

I think so. It was contemporary German cinema. We watched a couple of Heimatfilms, but I don’t recall the names.

Good Bye, Lenin! is pretty good Ostalgie. It’s at the HIL. Their selection of German film isn’t bad. There’s a Werner Herzog collection, and I think some Fassbinder, Tykwer and Dörrie. The HIL has some German expressionist film, too.

        It’s all pretty good, really.
