Relevant To Your Interests #016

July 30, 2009
  • SappyFest starts tomorrow night in Sackville, NB. The festival has been plagued by venue changes, rescheduling, and last-minute cancellations (WOMEN, Shapes and Sizes, Fembots, and most recently Dog Day have all bowed out), so take a look at the schedule one last time if you’re heading that way. Related: I haven’t seen Eric’s Trip since they toured in support of The Eric’s Trip Show in 2001. Yee!
  • This Sunday in Saint John, Amanda Ryall is putting on an all ages fundraiser in the hopes of purchasing a PA system which would be available free of charge to anyone who wants to use it for all ages shows.

The rental of a PA system is one of the highest costs to putting on a show and many of the people who want to put on all ages shows simply don’t have the money to rent it. The PA system will be free to use for anybody at any time, but it will have to be booked in advance and will be made available on a first come, first serve basis. Persons borrowing the PA system will need to sign a rental and assume all
liability for anything that should happen to the PA system.

This is such a sweet idea! You can see Jokes About War, Clinton Charlton, and eight other acts on Sunday, August 2nd at the Carleton Community Centre starting at 3pm. Get the scoop on the Giraffecycle forum.

  • Who ran over Chris Murphy from Sloan while he was riding his bike in Toronto last Friday? Probably a drunk driver!
  • Did the other members of Metallica plan to fire Lars Ulrich in 1986?
  • Strap your hands ‘cross my engines: Springsteen to play his Born To Run album in its entirety in Chicago.
  • Marilyn Manson will be in the Maritimes in September, is threatening to do violence to music journalists
  • Jello Biafra announces new project, Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine. That’s all you need to know, really.
  • Dartmouth is home to a new all ages and 19+ punk venue. The Old Mill Upstairs (conveniently located upstairs from The Old Mill Bar on Wyse Road) will host their first pair of shows on August 1st with Dockside Hookers, The Nailheads, High Crimes, and Total Bastards at 6pm, followed by Dockside Hookers, The Nailheads, The Fat Stupids and Shitkicker at 9pm. The early show is all ages, the late show is not, and there’s more info over on Locals™.
  • Kid Rock: likes pussy, hates Twitter
  • Mick Jones has opened The Rock and Roll Public Library in London:

The Rock n Roll Public Library is Mick Jones’s (The Clash, B.A.D, Carbon Silicon) direct artistic challenge to the likes of the corporate 02 British Music Experience. Rather than let his creative legacy atrophy Jones is transforming his own archive of nearly 10,000 artefacts into one unique “guerrilla-library.” Set under the Westway motorway in 3000 sq.ft of former office space, Jones’s five-week civic endeavour will also encourage visitors to enrol, interact with the archive-exhibition (Jones began collecting well before he formed The Clash in 1976 to eventual international success, as such it forms an invaluable guide to the influences that informed Jones as a pop-artist). Also uniquely by request users will be able to scan (courtesy Genus, U.K distributor of the Book2net Kiosk) certain objects and via memory stick carry them away. Please note visitors to the world’s first, resolutely alternative, Rock n Roll Public Library shouldn’t expect peace and quiet.

  • One time the (now defunct) Cambrian Explosions from Saint John drove to Halifax where they assaulted the Mastodon of Mastodon Ridge, played some shows, and generally got into mischief. Here’s some video via, and there’s more where that come from:

That library thing Mick Jones is doing looks brilliant.

I wonder if Ol Mick Jones needs a rock ‘n roll Librarian?

The Cambrian Explosions are still an active band, we just like to take long periods of time to carefully select our shows. We have extremely discriminating tastes.
