Saturday Videos

While poking around on Youtube recently, I came across these videos of a Shotmaker set from 1995. This footage, shot in Philadelphia, is some of the only existing video evidence of the band. There are some other partial video clips out there, but these ones perhaps best present what it would have been like to see the band: poor sound, small crowd in an empty room, equipment problems, etc. There are a hundred little things about these videos that make them intriguing documents.

This is camcorder footage, so the music comes out as just a wash of noise, pretty much. But nevertheless, the band is represented well. Shotmaker tapped into an intensity that few other bands of their sort ever find, an intensity that saw its ultimate expression in the Mouse Ear [Forget-Me-Not] LP, the band’s last record, released the year after these videos were filmed. For many of us, Shotmaker had come and gone long before our having any knowledge of them. If you were fortunate enough to see them live in their day, you’re among only few. And for the rest of us, these video clips provide some rare images to go along with the sounds.

they played in saint john in 94/95 where tapps is, or whatever is there now. apparently the show was pretty intense as the band learned a friend of theirs was shot earlier in the day. i met one of the members many years later when he was playing with slow parker. which was awesome.

    That’s interesting.

Slowparker played in Fredericton in 2001 or 2002, was that around the time you saw them?

That was 2001, what a shitshow. We promised them food which ended up being vouchers for O’Malley’s, and they were all vegetarians. Whoops! I believe Hayden (formerly of The Grey, now of METZ) was in that band too, but I’m not certain.
