Tokyo Below

December 5, 2009

Tokyo Below is a short (~25 minute) documentary about underground music in Japan circa 2001. Director James R Petix (more recently of It Came from Detroit fame) interviews a bunch of Japanese bands of varying genres about what it’s like to be an independent rock and roll band slogging it out in the face of J-Pop (spoiler: the universal answer is “kind of difficult.”) He also talks to fans who discuss how American bands like Nirvana, NOFX, and Bad Religion completely obliterated the existing music scene when they came to town in the 90s. Hey, just like everywhere!

Bonus: if you’ve ever wondered what Japanese glam metal looks like, the answer lies herein.
