  • NDP MP for Timmins-James Bay Charlie Angus has brought forward a private member’s bill which would add a levy to the purchase cost of all iPods and other mp3 players sold in Canada. This sounds like a shitty deal on the surface, but the reasoning is that the funds would be set aside for organizations like CRIA and their ilk, who are always crying about how Canada is soft of copyright infringement. This means music fans like you and me could share songs to our hearts’ content without fear of being sold out to the copyright police by our ISPs. Harper’s Conservatives are, naturally, strictly opposed. If you want to tell your Member of Parliament how you feel about all this, you can start here.
  • Did you guys hear Thrush Hermit are playing some reunion shows with their original lineup? I want to discuss the disingenuous use of the words “original lineup” in this context, but I don’t have all the facts so I won’t. Joel Plaskett and a bunch of dudes he hung out with in the 90s are definitely playing some songs at the Manhattan Club in Moncton tonight, of that much I am certain.
  • OBEY IV

  • Festivals! Halifax’s Divorce Records has released the lineup for this year’s OBEY Convention happening in May. The fourth edition of the festival’s headliners include US Girls, Slim Twig, Homostupids, and Holy Cobras with more announcements coming as the festival approaches.
  • CBC Radio 3 listeners voted Evolve (aka: “The Evolve Music and Awareness Festival”) the best festival in Canada. Really.
  • Related: one of The Allman Brothers has apparently been confirmed as a headliner for Fredericton’s Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in the fall. Hey, remember when they booked Bloc Party a couple of years ago? Yeah, me neither. Dad rock 4 life!
  • Rumour has it Pavement will be among the headliners at this year’s Osheaga festival in Montreal. Exclaim says the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion have been confirmed, but the full line up will not be announced for another week or two.
  • International Girl Gang Underground is a compilation zine “that picks up where riot grrrl left off” and is seeking submissions. I want to contribute to this but I don’t know what to say.
  • Did you know Robin Black is a pro MMA fighter? For people who don’t know who I’m talking about, he was the front-man for Robin Black and the Intergalactic something-or-others in the early aughts. He was kind of the Canadian Marilyn Manson or Iggy Pop Jr or something. One time I saw him on one of those naughty shows they air on Showcase after 10pm on Fridays and he was talking about how he’s into nipple torture or something. And he used to be a hairdresser, too. So the cage fighting thing is strange and yet completely appropriate.

Oh that Harvest. If they could get a Doobie Brother in there, it’d be all set.

I’m hoping for Foghat or Steely Dan. Ultimate Pass, here I come!
