Records of Note: May 2010

May 4, 2010

May 4th
Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record (Arts & Crafts)
A lot of people like Broken Social Scene! I don’t know why! They sound like Emerson Lake and Palmer to me!

Heaven Is WheneverThe Hold Steady – Heaven Is Whenever (Vagrant)
I used to like The Hold Steady quite a bit, actually! But now the band seems like a parody of themselves! Pitchfork Reviews Reviews has some insight! Glad it’s not just me!

The New Pornographers – Together (Matador)
A lot of people also like The New Pornographers! tells me I ought to be among them! In reality, I find them incredibly dull and I’m completely mystified as to how this band seems to consistently wind up on so many best-of lists! Better luck next time, insane super computer!

The National – High Violet (4AD)
A lot of people like The National, too! I have no idea why! Some of their lyrics are pretty good, I suppose, but the overall package does absolutely nothing for me!

Sleighbells – Treats (Mom + Pop)
Sleighbells are a noisey BUZZ BAND from BROOKLYN! They’ve had a few EPs and random songs floating around on the internet for a while now, but this is their first LP! I don’t dislike them, but I also don’t really get whatever it is they’re doing! And I’ve tried really hard to figure it out!

Wintersleep – New Inheritors (Lab Work)
A lot of people like Wintersleep! I never have! I didn’t like them when they were small and playing tiny clubs, and I don’t like them now that they’re somewhat bigger and have graduated to playing university cafeterias and multi-purpose rooms! I always thought they were mediocre at what they do and kind of boring!

The Sadies – Darker Circles (Yep Rock)
A lot of people like The Sadies! I’ve never really checked them out, but “a lot of people” clearly have a horrible track record for choosing good music! Anyway, The Sadies are playing Sappyfest, I hear! So I’ll see them then, I guess!

May 25th
Bigger and BlackererDavid Cross – Bigger and Blackerer (Sub Pop)
I was really excited for this but it has (surprise!) leaked and it’s not great! I laughed at “My Ass Is Haunted,” but nothing else! I Drink For A Reason wasn’t so hot either, if you want to know the truth! I kind of have the sense David has genuinely stopped giving a shit! And by “giving a shit,” I mean, “working hard at telling funny stories”! Now he’s more like that one really funny guy at your job instead of a guy who is professionally hilarious! Sad times!

Wow! I completely agree with your opinions on broken social scene, the new pornographers, and wintersleep! A boat load of boredom.

I’d usually make a case for The National, but this newest record isn’t what I’d use to do it. Meh.

    Anyway, agreed, everything stinks.

I really dig the song “Mr. November” for some reason, but that’s the only thing of theirs I’ve been inclined to hear more than once or twice.

Very disappointed to hear that Bigger and Blackerer is not very good. And that the new album by the National isn’t great. Ugh.

Yeah, Bigger and Blackerer = disappointing. Maybe it will grow on me, but comedy albums tend to get less funny the more you hear them. There is a DVD as well, and I think I read it’s different material from what’s on the CD, so maybe that could be good? Also, the new Brian Posehn album is pretty funny.

That’s not to say that the new National record is bad, really, it just seems a bit meh compared to the last couple. It has its moments, though.

Yeah, I need to give the album a listen. Very few bands can beat a live performance by the National, though.

Mary: May I ask where you found B&B?

It’s on all the usual torrent suspects, I believe.

A few corrections: David Cross is only funny when other people write his material (i.e. Bob Odenkirk). You are wrong about the Sadies, but that’s okay because you’re right about the other bands. At least as far as I know – actually the only band on that list that I’ve heard besides the Sadies is Wintersleep. They’ve always been a snooze fest, although I do like their song “Jeremy”.

Most of David Cross’s other stand up albums are pretty good, especially Shut Up You Fucking Baby.

I’m officially reserving judgement re: The Sadies and will check them out with interest at SappyFest.

I know a few folks who had to see the Sadies live in order to be convinced. Actually, I’m a bit surprised that you’ve never seen them before.I will check out that David Cross album and file a report.
