Earlier this evening at Gallery Connexion in Fredericton, there was a performance by French artist Pierre Bastien, a musician/performer/inventor known for his home-made mechanical orchestras. Sitting atop a table, his automatons for this performance consisted of meccano rigs, rubberbands, strips of paper, small motors and other such items, plus a partial accordion and turntable. When combined, the various components clinked and knocked out polyrhythmic patterns and strange melodies, over which Bastien played live trumpet.
