Earlier this evening at Gallery Connexion in Fredericton, there was a performance by French artist Pierre Bastien, a musician/performer/inventor known for his home-made mechanical orchestras. Sitting atop a table, his automatons for this performance consisted of meccano rigs, rubberbands, strips of paper, small motors and other such items, plus a partial accordion and turntable. When combined, the various components clinked and knocked out polyrhythmic patterns and strange melodies, over which Bastien played live trumpet. So odd and engaging, it has to be seen to really be appreciated.

The event was part of the Surgery concert series, and caught Bastien a couple of days after his performance at this year’s Obey Convention.
