Halifax Pop Explosion 1994

October 16, 2010

As you may know, this year’s Halifax Pop Explosion happens next week. I’m not even going to begin to tell you about all the goodness, for there is too much. Have a look for yourself.

When I was at my parents’ house for Thanksgiving last weekend, my mom instructed me to go through a box of old VHS tapes to see if there were any I wanted to keep. I found some gems, including this coverage of the second edition of the Halifax Pop Explosion.

This aired on The New Music, which was a music news show that ran on Citytv and MuchMusic from the early 80s into the aughts. I’m pretty sure it no longer exists, along with the vast, vast majority of MuchMusic’s music programming.

The highlights include 19-year-old Joel Plaskett rolling up in a Ford Econoline Special and scraggly Buck 65 Stinkin’ Rich keepin’ it real in a parking lot. Plus, a bunch of interviews, tiny Mary Lou Lord busking on the streets of Halifax, footage of Jale, Eric’s Trip, Rebecca West, and Sunny Day Real Estate, and a quick trip inside the just-renovated Cafe Mokka. And a whole wack of other shit.
