The Dream of the 90s

January 29, 2011

Portlandia is a new sketch comedy show written and performed by Fred Armisen (SNL) and Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney), who previously collabourated on the web series Thunderant. I like it because it lampoons the same kind of twee white people who were the inspiration for Stuff White People Like. The sort of urbanites who shop at feminist bookstores, buy groceries at the farmers’ market, and have earnest discussions about where our dinner came from other than “the kitchen.” I’m one of these and so are most of my friends. I’m at peace with it.

We first hipped you to this show last summer, but it finally started airing on IFC in the US last Friday. It’s not airing at all in Canada as far as I know. TO THE INTERNET!

Here’s the opening song from the first episode.

This makes me think of every zine or craft fair I’ve attended in the last few years.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go marinate some heirloom tomatoes for a vegtarian pasta dish I’m making to bring to a potluck for a certain trans folk singer later today. I’m not even joking, I really do.
