Jale – Aunt Betty 7″

I bought this at Sam the Record Man’s Younge Street store when I was fifteen and visiting my brother in Toronto, and I was floored by even finding it in there. I’d heard of Jale because of Brave New Waves with Brent Bambury on CBC Stereo (what they used to call Radio 2), but had never seen anything by them at any of my local record stores. I don’t think I knew about Room 201 and Backstreet yet, so I was still relying on Sam’s, A&A, and the music department at Zeller’s a lot.

This pretty red 7″ it came with totally sweet stickers for both Cinnamon Toast Records and Jale, which I immediately affixed to my Hillroy Note Tote. Some simp at school was like, “Is that your name? Gale?” NOSTALGIA!

jale met at the local art college, discovered they could all sing in key and harmonize, divvied up who would play what, and in April ’92 jale (an acronym of their first names) was born. No one had any previous musical experience except Jennifer, who sang on Smeared, the DGC debut by fellow Halifaxers Sloan. jale were not one, however, to simply revel in their charming lack of proficiency like so many other bands who float by on their good looks. They quickly became known as The Hardest Working Band In Halifax, practicing sometimes seven nights a week and working days to pay off their equipment. The results are simply stunning, weaving strong vocal harmonies through a melodic wall o’ guitar like no one’s business.

Note: this got a lot of play on my plastic Mickey Mouse record player from Sears, and kind of sounds like shit now. Sorry!
